Hype-odermic.

Several of you have asked me to write a post about the swine flu/H1N1 vaccine.
Many are wondering if they should get it. If it's safe. If it's necessary.
I think maybe there's the hope I'll give you the definitive answer you need.
I won't.

I am a health care professional with over twenty years (how is that possible?) experience. I am also a mom.

Here's what I know:

Statistics can be used to illustrate your point regardless of where you stand on the issue so are, to some extent, useless.

The media use sensationalized reporting because it generates job security.

Fear for our children's health and safety is overwhelming.

The vaccine reportedly takes two doses and 14 days to be effective in children.

Here's what I think:

Drug companies are for profit and are therefore unlikely to be objective.

Flu happens every year and people do die - it just hasn't always been reported in such detail.

People who have had flu vaccine can still get the flu.

Here's what my heart says:

As a parent you have to do whatever seems right for you and your family.

Doing your own research, rather than repeating what you have heard, is vital.

It is not helpful to criticize others for their choices.

Wishing you clear minds and peaceful decisions.

  1. I just had this discussion with my friend. I am not doing it for my kids. If they get it, it's the flu.

  2. Thanks for you objective comments. I agree with all you wrote. We don't generally get sick and therefore we don't generally get the flu shot. But I can understand why others do. As you said, to each their own conscience.

  3. Right on, sister. As with all issues relating to parenting, go with what feels right for you and your own family.

  4. I totally agree with you. I am personally not getting it but it might be right for other people. Who am I to say they shouldn't get it or judge them or be mean because they did what is best for them and their families.

  5. I soooooo 150% agree with you!! I think you hit the nail on the head. Follow your gut, we all have that voice in us!! Just because your gut tells you one thing doesn't mean someone elses gut is saying the same so don't judge. For me my gut says don't - it also says that for the flu vaccine as well. I never have, other vaccines I do, but not the flu ones.....

  6. Good post. Mother's instinct should never be ignored. As long as you love and care about your children, you will make the right decision. You just have to believe in yourself as a parent.

  7. Personally I got it (I am a nurse and am around it a LOT)...my husband got it and so will my son (7)...HOWEVER...this does not make it the correct choice for everyone. I agree..there is no right or wrong choice, well said.

  8. The bottom line is a parent needs to be the parent! We need to do our own research and make our own decisions, not let the drug companies and media do it for us! Obviously, our doctor's opinions matter, but it is still up to th parent! Thanks for reminding us!
