For Me to Poop On!

My thanks to Triumph the Insult Comic Dog for the title.

Why do diapers have characters on them?

Firstly, do the good people at Sesame Street and Disney know what is done in a diaper?
Why do they want Elmo and Mickey defaced this way?

Secondly, what is the marketing ploy?
Do they honestly think a three month old is going to intimate their character preference to their primary diaper purchaser?

Thirdly, what is the purpose?
At first I thought it was to help me find the front of the diaper. But no, there's a character on the back too.
Give a sleep deprived parent a break here.

Does it actually work? Do you purchase diapers based on your favorite cuddly critter?
(Just to save you the trouble of emailing - I do know there are many, often eco-friendly, character free diapers on the market.)

Doesn't it just raise the cost of diapers?
oh......

  1. I have to agree with you: What *is* the purpose?! And all I can think is that some disgruntled licensor/diaper maker decided to play a cruel and nasty little joke on parents. I can hear them "The kids will want spcific diapers and then the parents will buy buy buy more! mwa ha ha" And don't even get me started on the gender specific diapers. Once when Target was out of Princess pullups we had to hear tantrums every night about the "Pixar car" pullups. "BUT BUT....I caaaant wear *thoooooose*, they are for boooooooooys" Thank you Mr Disney and Mr Pampers. I hope you made a nice profit.

  2. I always felt that way about bibs that said "Grandma's Little Darling". The baby can't see the bib, it's for your eyes-so why not a photo of George Clooney instead? Or burp cloths with little ducks on them that my sister-in-laws tried to talk me into registering for, when I insisted I wanted a pack of plain white cloth diapers instead. Their reasoning was "They're nice to have in case you go somewhere." Huh? I assured them that none of my outfits went with small yellow duckies.

And you're right, it does raise the price of the diapers. I doubt that Mr. Disney lets Huggies use his characters out of the goodness of his heart.
